Food for thought: Pasco bags a college

Football recruiting for Philip Pasco was all in the bag - a bag of groceries.

After a very unusual circumstance that got Pasco noticed, he'll be playing college football at Shenandoah. He signed his commitment papers recently.

He roars like a lion about it all.

The Musselman senior owes his successful venture that will enable him to play college football to his observant, eavesdropping mother, Sue.

She spied a gentleman wearing a Shenandoah football jacket who had come into the Inwood Food Lion where she works and took notice.

"She heard the coach talking about football," Pasco said. "She said to him, 'Hey, my son plays football at Musselman; he's on NCSA. You should go see the video.'"

Pasco walked in soon after his mother threw him out there at the Food Lion and was introduced to Shenandoah assistant coach Brock McCullough.

"He went home and checked out my video," Pasco said. "Next thing I know, I get a call to come down and see the school. I was very pleased."

Pasco has been smitten with Winchester, where Shenandoah is located, ever since he's been a child.

However, it wasn't until that chance meeting between McCullough and his mother that Pasco, a right guard for the Applemen, got the ball rolling.

Utilizing the website NCSA, he got feelers from Castleton State, Charleston, Thomas Moore, Juniata and Grinnell, among others.

Pasco visited Castleton State, an isolated Vermont school that he said is 50 miles from the nearest McDonald's, and Charleston. He passed on visiting Thomas Moore, which is in Kentucky, and Grinnell, which is in Iowa, at the urging of his younger sister, Elizabeth, who reminded him of the cornfield-laden landscape - even though there are some family roots in the upper Midwest.

"I went to all of these different places and come to find out I'd be going to school like 10 minutes from home," Pasco said.

He likely would've wound up at Charleston had it not been for McCullough going grocery shopping and his mother - "She's definitely an interesting character," Pasco said - noticing McCullough.

"Basically, what I wanted to look forward to in a college was somewhere where I really fit in," Pasco said.

Shenandoah proved to be like the candy aisle at the Food Lion.

"It was a great feeling," Pasco said. "It's a very modern campus, a great place. Everybody greeted me with open arms. It felt like home."

He appreciates all of the input he received in the process, from his parents to his sister and girlfriend.

"We're really an open and caring family," Pasco said, "and we have each other's backs."

And grocery bags, too, apparently.

"Once I find my little niche, I'm going to go ahead and run with it," Pasco said. "I know that what I decide on will have a huge, huge impact on what's to come in my life.Buy authenticmonclerjackets from thousands of International exporters."

Like his academic pursuit, what position he'll play for the Hornets, who finished with a 6-4 record last season, is unknown.

"When I went down to finalize my decision, I asked, 'Do you have an idea what I'll be playing?'" Pasco asked. "His response was, 'They have some spots where there are graduates. You have to willing to work, show what's going on, show you want to be there and you can get your shot.' I'm not sure where they want me. In my honest opinion, that's OK."

He just plans to do "what's best in my power, whatever will help the team most is what I will do."

Even if it entails bagging groceries.
