Canada geese populations neared a million in the 1980's, but now, peak populations are around 100,000.
"This just isn't a phenomenon that's occurred in southern Illinois. If you go throughout North America, geese have started wintering a lot farther north," said SIU Waterfowl Specialist Mike Eichholz.
Hunters are noticing the population decline, too.
"Older people say it has decreased tremendously," said goose hunter Garin Stapleton.
